Dr. S M Lockridge, “A Sermon must do four things for you:
1. PROVOKE YOUR WILL – Correct you
2. TAN YOUR HIDE – Challenge you
3. WARM YOUR HEART – Inspire you
4. STRETCH YOUR MIND – Instruct you
2 Timothy 4:2
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, encourage, with great patience and careful instruction.
1. CORRECT: PROVOKE THE WILL
Correction brings awareness we are off course and guides us to get back on course...
2. REBUKE: TAN THE HIDE
REBUKE IS TO reprimand, call on the carpet.
...HERE THE WORD IS NOT JUST CONVINCING A US OF THE ERROR OF OUR WAYS; IT IS ALSO POINTING US TO THE RIGHT PATH
Bringing us back on course:
3. ENCOURAGE: WARM THE HEART
Encouraging One Another Imparts Life.
Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification,
that it may impart grace to the hearers.
Proverbs 12:18 (NKJV) There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.
4. INSTRUCT: STRETCH THE MIND
"A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
"God uses Scripture to PREPARE and EQUIP his people to do every good work."
The primary goal in preaching and teaching is MATURITY.
